Newshour field trip

February 14th, 2008 ·

I had the pleasure of hanging out at Newshour last Friday. Newshour is one of our greatest clients at National Public Media (where I still serve as Technology Strategist) and they are still the producers of some of the finest content on television.
Unfortunately, the web has moved a little faster than public tv budgets have, [...]

Current TV Site Relaunch Worked

January 29th, 2008 ·

Back on October 15th, Current TV relaunched it’s website. Now it’s filing for an IPO, which made me wonder, “Was the relaunch a success?”
Check out this Alexa graph.
Lucky for us, when they relaunch they dropped the .tv and picked up the .com, making it easier to see precisely when they relaunched and how their traffic [...]

2008: The Year Web Video Discovers How to Fund Itself

January 2nd, 2008 ·

Last year I made no predictions for 2007. I just didn’t feel certain enough about anything to really broadcast it. My only bet last year - in fact - was on the future of the web as a platform, and on web platforms in general (starting work on BricaBox in the Spring) — and that [...]

Verdino on NBC going widgetized

June 6th, 2007 ·

Greg Verdino is the VP of Emerging Channels at Digitas, so not just “another opinion”, although his is truly just another opinion (as there are so damn many!).
I don’t always agree with his analysis (he said at a round-table I attended recently that “If I had to pick a standard for web video advertising, I’d [...]

NYC-based Blip.tv gets funding

June 5th, 2007 ·

Congrats to SoHo/Chinatown-based Blip.tv and its founders for their new round of funding.
News of the round was first covered by NewTeeVee, and then picked up by the NYTimes.I had the pleasure of hanging out with CEO Mike Hudack in their offices last week and I’ll join in the chorus of folks saying “they get it.”
Also, [...]

With YouTube going H.264, will iPhone’s Safari Play Flash?

June 4th, 2007 ·

From a user experience point of view, iPhone’s integration with iTunes will be best ever, I’m sure.
Video in your iTunes library will have a natural mobile home.
But what about all that other video we consume? Most of it on the web is in Flash these days, and many people seem confused about how much support [...]
