What’s a Sustainable College Look Like?

A good friend of mine worked at the Sustainable Endowments Institute after college, and finally, they've released their College Sustainability Report Card.

15 school tied for first, with an A- on their report card.

My alma matter, Brandeis University, got a B-, mostly because of infrastructure issues and for having a non-transparent endowment.

How did your school perform?

Do you think this sort of report is useful? I do. I think it helps to see the factors which make a sustainable college layed out in this fashion. Now I know what issues to lobby my school on!

  • Since I'm on the Board of Trustees of my university, I thought I'd check it out. There are some fairly large holes in the report and some certain strangeness. For example, they gave us an F in Endowment because "there is no known disclosure of the endowment amount" yet they list the amount of the endowment in the summary.
  • Interesting. I'll try to get my friend to comment on that fact.
  • w00t, Middlebury gets an A-, similarly because of non-transparent endowment. but otherwise we rock!
  • Anything, such as a report like this, that gets people talking about sustainability is a good thing, but obviously it's pretty easy to take pot shots at any methodology :)
