When is exclusivity okay?

I think gated social networks have their purpose, when they serve a purpose.

The exclusivity for exclusivity's sake sites are lame, along with their offline counterparts. But, if there's a reason to be private, like TheFunded, for instance, then I say rock on.

Thoughts? When do you think exclusivity is okay?

Sites like MySpace and Facebook are designed to attract a broad base of users. A newer breed, like ModelsHotel.com and the forthcoming Diamond Lounge, are building business plans based on exclusivity and the age-old custom of keeping out the riff-raff.
