Meeting humanity’s needs without harming future generations.
SRI, or socially responsible investing, is one of the greyest of grey areas in the capitalist system.
Among members of my family, we talk about this a lot, and never really come to consensus regarding how to direct investments for them to be deemed “socially responsible” and “successful.” Some of [...]

More on Yesterday’s Stock Hiccup
February 28th, 2007 · Comments
Yesterday I commented on the lack of attention folks in my (quick, which hat am I wearing today?) Web 2.0 industry gave to stock market troubles. Yes, sometimes it’s great to discuss the latest spat between Sequoia Capital and ComVentures, but wouldn’t you have expected VentureBeat to make mention of the 400 point decline?
After my [...]
If we’re Web 2.0 insiders and the stock market falls spectacularly, does anyone hear?
February 27th, 2007 · 2 Comments
Today, the stock market fell spectacularly enough that I switched off my usual afternoon diet of Worlds Greatest Police Chases and watched the stock market train wreck on CNBC.
Best thing about it: no one in the Web 2.0sphere gave a hoot.
Here’s a shot of the Technorati Top 10 Searches as of 5pm (notice Tammy Nyp:
Equally, [...]

Yahoo Earnings, Panama, and Integration
January 24th, 2007 · Comments
I’ve read through the announcement, some reporting and blog articles, and it seems to be pretty upbeat for this downtrodden company. Panama is indeed implemented (my account was upgraded this week) and their new algorithm (which give preference to “effective” ads, not just the highest bidder) should increase ad clicks and thus revenue. What people [...]

Anti-Google-Trust?
January 3rd, 2007 · 1 Comment
With Google’s YouTube acquisition still fresh on the deal platter, their search, adwords and adsense products dominating the market causing some people to say “game over”, Google Checkout in full swing, and Docs & Spreadsheets promising (not yet threatening) to take a chunk of MSFT’s Office business, is the Goliath of Mountain View, CA asking [...]

The Web 2.0 Valuation Project
December 30th, 2006 · 6 Comments
One of the toughest things in starting a User Generated Content/Wisdom of Crowds/Social Networking, Web 2.0, website is figuring out how to value it (for yourself or investors). What is your site really worth?
In some industries this is fairly easy. If it were an oil exploration company, one could look at the values of the [...]

I Yahooed It!… … … … … Not!
December 4th, 2006 · Comments
I “Yahooed” Fred Wilson’s article today.
Not!
In his article, Fred suggests that Yahoo! needs to do a number of things to improve itself as a company, and he highlights search improvements as a big part of that improvement. (He also calls for more properties to drop the “yahoo.com” as their top level domain and be independently [...]

innonate 8% rule: Spend part of your time working on a tangential plan
November 15th, 2006 · Comments
One common topic of discussion in the start-up space is when to call it quits or what to do when you see your model failing. Yesterday, OnStartups did an article called StartUp Suicide: Five Ways to Kill Your Startup, listing some sure-fire ways of failing early; today, Wired had this article, which talked about Riya’s [...]

WSJ: 10 Ways We’ll Consume Less Energy
October 16th, 2006 · Comments
A great follow up to the Fast Company article I reported on last month was in a special section of the WSJ this morning: Less Power to the People (sub req) is a story that examines why Americans may soon begin to consumer less electrical power than they do today. The Journal lists 10 ways, [...]

Ill Logic: Seasons Changing. What stocks should I buy?
August 30th, 2006 · Comments
I remember "learning" about stocks in my high school econ class. After a few days of talking about them, my teacher set up a stock picking contest for the students, many of whom had gained no understanding whatsoever of the market during the tutorial. Anyway, one the biggest mistakes I remember people making - at [...]
